The Future of Indian Agriculture!

At the recent launch (Friday July 5)of Prof Y K Alaghs; book on “The Future of Indian Agriculture’ published by the National Book Trust, almost everybody connected with the world of agricultural economics, planning, administration, research and policy was present, and both on-stage and offstage discussions veered on accepting the structural changes in rural India . In extra to Vice President Hamid Ansari, Churlish Evolution Minister Jairam Ramesh, Planning Commission Member Abhijit Sengupta and Secretary Agriculture Ashish Bahuguna, many ex members and chairmen of the Ordain of Agriculture Costs and Prices and officials of the Planning Commission, besides professors and academics from JNU, DU and NCAER and NCAP were present. However it must be clarified that this is not a book review ‘per se’ for your columnist has not completed reading it. This is greater in the nature of a ‘flavour of discussions’ with participants in the book launch event, most regarding who were keen observers of the Indian agricultural scenario.

Rural India was changing faster than ever before, and the rate of growth like ‘census towns’ showed that the country was witnessing an interim urbanization, which Jairam Ramesh dubbed as “suburban”. These were purely different from former President Kalam’s concept of PURA (Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas) because ‘rururban’ was growing extra in default, rather than as a design. It was more akin to Gurucharan Das’s description of the growth of Gurgaon – nay because, but in spite of central planning! Incidentally, it must be placed on record that unchanging though PURA is a great idea, and is animal pushed by the GoI, there are few examples regarding a successful rollout.

Why was ururban growing? Why was employment in ‘core agriculture’, viz production like cereal stagnant, if not actually declining? Why should we have a distinction amid ‘core’ and ‘non-core’ agriculture, especially as high growth sectors in agriculture were horticulture, processing, post harvest management, fisheries, dairying, research and extension. Why are we not redesigning our operating systems to acknowledge the changes that are taking place accordingly rapidly? Reason are we not following up investments in irrigation with greater push towards water use efficiency, fertigation connective micro irrigation? Why are we not drawing lessons from the metamorphosis of Kalahandi and Puruliya which have transformed their incomes and livelihoods? Why were we hardly paying competent attention to a sector which accounted for 14% of our GDP, 11 % concerning our exports and over 50% regarding our employment?

Let us attempt the answers. First, ‘rururban’ was growing because of the organization of agricultural production. Farmers required agricultural inputs and services – from fertilizer and credit to aggregation, value addition and post harvest management. Many of these came from the demands of High Value Agriculture. Accordingly each Gram panchayat with an active co-op society, or a rural bank branch, instead a fertilizer bureau centre of IFFCO became rururban.

Second, employment potential in ‘core agriculture’, viz cereals, oilseeds, pulses and sugarcane was negative growing because of many factors : higher wage rates, mechanization, renew seeds ampersand better crop management practices. Likewise profitability of ‘core agriculture’ was limited by the MSP, et al the physical presence of procurement agencies in the production region. On the contrary, realizations in High Heirloom Agriculture were more market driven, and even businesses like Mother Dairy and NDDB had to increase the farm gate prices every three to four months in a self correcting mechanism.

Third, it was apogee time the artificial divide halfway ‘core and non-core’ husbandry was broken. After all, it was the same farmer who performed a wide spectrum like activities, and more often than not, he performed both. Thus our farmer not only grew wheat and rice, but yet had a few cows and had a plot for seasonal vegetables. However his Kisan credit card was basically catering only to his short term credit needs- et sequens he could not purchase Murah buffaloes , or a potato digger with this card . This is where the new interventions were required. Moreover, farmer’s incomes could grow single from the noncore sectors, and this was also the sector which offered the best scope for private sector investment. Therefore we need to redesign our Kisan Credit card, as also our agri insurance policy, which in turn was linked to loans offered under KCC. These were also the sectors which showed a high demand elasticity- thereby making it more remunerative for farmers.

Prof Alagh has been dubbed as’irrigation fundamentalist’ in view of his strong conviction that when a farmer gets water, he will certainly cessation ground and get bumper harvests. Still after the first round of irrigation, there was an imminent need to move to micro irrigation for improved water use efficiency. In the first round, water had not been adequately priced, or cared for, and had bot treated almost like an infinite ‘public good’. This had to change, and therefore the water resources and agriculture ministry had to work in arrant tandem. Last, but not the least – retain we drawn our lessons from Kalahandi and Puruliya. These districts have not only become food surplus districts – they have risen out of abject pauperism and show improved health indicators. The success of agriculture in these districts is as critical pro re nata getting record yields in the Sangrur (for rice), or Raver (bananas) or Kapurthala (potato)! The defense to all these questions is that while we do know what is best for us, somewhere along the line, there is a hiatus between our intent and ability to implement. The earlier we ford this, the meliorate it would be for all like us!

Career choices for young generations: is agriculture still a viable option?

These days there are several career choices for younger generation, some of these industries are more worthwhile than the others ampersand even in this modern times industries such as agriculture and forestry is lifelessness an option. However, does a career in farming can be as satisfying in terms of prospects and salaries qua one in finance, protection or engineering? Career paths in agriculture have its own pros and cons and we shall investigate these in the following next chapters.

First of all let us start our investigation with the prospective salary conditions. Salaries in farming are clearly lower than in any high paying industries. This depreciate figure are supported with a higher job security; colossal business entities working in this field are often enjoy continuous government funding in order to compensate the high business risks associated with mammality husbandry et cetera crop production such as weather conditions, pests and various diseases. Hence, being employed in a private agricultural business entity the employees can always feel the protective hands concerning the supremacy yet not in that extent as those employed in the public sector.

People working in agriculture also enjoy a hugely healthy lifestyle involving longanimity walks in the countryside and generally being outdoors on a regular basis. Those who are hired in finance also insurance spend weeks and months in overcrowded office atmosphere surrounded by fluorescent lights further flickering screens. This family of environment combined with high stress can often lead to serious health implications so making a pursuit in the agriculture seeming more valuable than are those in the high-flying share banking.

Should you become fed up with the work in rural settings you can always move to your nearby city and try to find another deed there; with your skills you gained being in the management in an agricultural enterprise income that you have acquired a good set of transferable skills. These will always valued well in other industries as well thus you can be sure that a career change will not mean a great difficulty for you at all.

Last but not least, working in the saturn naturally brings you in the heart of many small pastoral communities intent that you will be socially accepted and you can be a useful ration of such a community. Working in an office of a multi-national IT-firm can leave you with a strange opinion that you are not more than a plurality on a spreadsheet.

Having investigated several attributes about an agriculture-related career it is easy to orthodox that in contrast of lower salaries there are plenty of advantages making this business choice more valuable than the rest. Also, if you are still concerned because of lower salary prospects you can be assured; living in the country is always cheaper than living in a titanic city, so at the finis the day your salary might even have a positive balance compared to one concerning an IT-executive.

Agriculture Sector – The backbone of Indian Economy

Agriculture has bot spine of Indian economy sine ancient times. Agricultural has bot basic occupation for Indian people. Near about 70 percent of population in India is dependent on agriculture for its livelihood. Plenty of fertile disembark is available in India. Spermatize land is favorable for production of fruits, crops, minerals etc. Farmers take care of entire process of agriculture like sowing seeds, harvesting crops, watering, etc. The equipments used for plough, tractor, bullocks etc. Nowadays farmers are using modern technologies and equipments for agriculture purpose.
India is well known for its agriculture knowledge. People from different places come here to study agriculture science. Maximum earnings is produced from agriculture sector in India. Farmers in India are well soil, land fertility, quality of seeds, etc. Farmers have knowledge about what to produce and when. In new past number of poor farmers are committing suicide due to indecorous husbandry and loss in the field. Government has introduces several schemes and concessions to farmers. Government is also providing education to farmers about how to broaden the productivity of land. Initially farmers used the fertilizers, pesticides, and seeds un-proportionally which reduces the productivity of land. Now direction is taking care that farmers are enlightened properly about all activities in farming. Government is taking-care that farmer’s receive good return from their cultivations.

In present scenario there are many places in India where agriculture is not given importance. People fail to understand the importance of this sector. Dreadfully few people select this field as career instead occupation. In India farmers are manipulated near middlemen’s. They just look for commissions and income for themselves but forget the hard chore of farmers. Even today in some places farmers are exploited by the landlords. The revenues from agriculture sector have increased after introduction of modern technologies in farming. Now government is also taking several measures to embellish this sector. Many changes and improvements are required to increase the assets produced from this sector.
In small region of India the system of landlords still exists. Farmers take loans from the landlords but fail to return it as less revenue is generated. As a amercement the landlords capture or takeover the land of farmers. Some of the drawbacks in Indian agriculture are improper irrigation facilities, scarcity of essential commodities, and low financial ability of farmers, non availability of quality seeds, fertilizer and chemicals. The result of these whole drawbacks is backwardness of flora in India. Considering the serious issued in agriculture sector regime is taking several measures to improve the productivity of grove sector.

The Future of Indian Agriculture

At the zojuist launch (Friday July 5)of Prof Y K Alaghs; book on “The Future concerning Indian Agriculture’ published by the Citizen Book Trust, almost everyone connected beside the world of agricultural economics, planning, administration, delving and policy was present, and both on-stage and offstage discussions veered on understanding the structural changes in rural India .
